China Driving Guide

Driving in China, Simplified

Everything foreigners need to know about driving, permits, rentals, and navigation in China

Can Foreigners Drive in China?

Yes — foreigners can legally drive in China, but you need a Temporary Driving Permit. Your home country license or International Driving Permit (IDP) is not accepted on its own. The process is manageable but requires preparation.

  • Convert your license at a Vehicle Management Office
  • Pass a written theory test (available in English)
  • Rent from agencies that accept foreign permits
  • Navigate with Gaode Maps (Amap) — works in English
